A Puleo’s Eagle Project

Monday, June 30th, 2008

On Saturday, June 28, 2008, the scouts and leaders of Troop 162 joined Anthony Puleo in doing his Eagle project. The project was to put in a Peace Garden at the convent of Villa Maria Academy in the Country Club section of the Bronx. Anthony had planned the project with the approval of Sr. Teresa Barton, CND, Principal of Villa Maria Academy, for the benefit of the children of the school and the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame who live in the Convent. Anthony had made the purchases of gardening materials and perennial plants so the garden will last a long time.

The Scouts met at about 9 a.m. Saturday and the first step of the project was to prepare the ground for planting by digging up the grass and weeds and turning the soil. Then the scouts laid out the plants to check the arrangement. The scouts dug holes for the plants, added rich top soil and put in the plants. Then the scouts added top soil throughout the garden and finally covered the area with red mulch to hold in moisture. The final touch was to put topsoil and mulch around the trees surrounding the garden to tie it all together.

The scouts working the project were Alex De Lalla, John Neddermeyer, Steven Lupo, Mark Schoenstein, Adam Schoenstein, James Wilson, Aaron Small, Thomas Puleo, and Josh Kelly. The scouts were joined by the troop’s Eagle Scouts: Alex Zic, Tom Conte, Larry Ahearn, and Nick Ahearn. Friend and former scout  Matt St. Dennis joined in on the day’s labors as well.
