Our annual beach campout at Short Beach, Smithtown, New York. This trip emphasizes fishing, beach camping, cooking, and snorkeling. The boys work together as patrols to set up their own campsite and prepare their own meals (and the fish they catch!)

Sharpshooters is Troop 162's annual Father-Son shooting trip. The boys get to practice shooting rifles, bows, and shotguns while exercising and learning about firearms safety and marksmanship. This year, we decided to incorporate a pig roast into the trip. The result was the best porkchops ever!

Each January, Troop 162 competes in the Bronx River District's Klondike Derby which is a sledding competition testing outdoor/scout skills, citizenship, teamwork, and Scout Spirit. This year the boys took home first prize (North Pole), and fourth place (West Meridian). Congratulations!!

Day Hike in New York State's Harriman State Park. The Scouts sharpened their hiking and orienteering skills and travelled five miles on the red dot trail. The day hike was to prepare scouts for a more strenuous two day backpacking trip later in the winter.

Our annual trip to Candlewood Lake, Conn. is our June camping trip where the scouts canoe out to a large island in the lake and spend the weekend canoeing, swimming, fishing, and tubing.

Camping in the snow, ice, and bitter cold is an event that Troop 162 has prided itself in for over a decade. We spend a month learning the skills necessary to survive, work, and have fun in cold weather and then put them to use in our winter camping trip. This year we went to Camp Seton in Greenwich, Conn. While it is not as demanding as our usual destination at Harriman State Park, snow showers, high winds, and slushy ground made 2008's winter camping trip interesting.

Each April, Troop 162 scouts help with Bronx River District's "Cub-o-ree" where Boy Scouts help to teach Cub Scouts valuable scout skills. Troop 162 is in charge of the first aid station where scouts help to teach cubs about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco as well as perform first aid on mock-victims of a car accident.

This year, the Troop camped on an island in the middle of Candlewood Lake, Conn. We spent the weekend fishing, swimming, kayaking, boating, tubing on and around the island.

The scouts hiked to Pine Swamp Mine in Harriman State Park, NY. Although the hike was not very long the heat proved to be a formidable obstacle.

The annual trip upto TMR where the scouts learn gun safety and shoot .22 rifles and use shotguns to shoot skeet. This year the troop roasted 4 chickens and a lamb on a spit over coals. We also had rain all day Saturday, which challeneged the scouts to stay dry and warm.
|
A hike over the mountains to the West Mountain Shelter. The scouts slept under a tarp pitched for shelter, cooked on a open fire, and hiked out in the snow and sleet.
|
The scouts braved sub-zero temperatures bone piercing wind, slippery ice, and a 50 pound dog sled to pull for the day while performing various skills.
|
The scouts went upto TMR Scout Camp Keowa for an ice fishing/winter camping trip. The ice on Crystal Lake was 10-12 inches thick. Some scouts brought ice skates, others improvised as you will in the following photos.
